Celebrating 35 Years of Avenue

A Note from Our CEO
Over the past three decades at the helm, I’ve proudly watched Avenue grow within Greater Northside and throughout Houston—from early home repair and neighborhood improvements, to developing and operating high-quality affordable housing, to providing resident services, homebuyer education, and community initiatives that help families build stronger futures. Together, we’ve helped tens of thousands of Houstonians improve their lives and communities.
When Avenue was founded in 1991, a group of neighbors came together with a simple but powerful belief: people should be able to stay in the communities they love. Housing, we knew, was about more than buildings. It was about stability, opportunity, and being empowered. That belief still guides us today.
This anniversary year is both a celebration and an invitation. In the months ahead, we’ll be sharing stories from our past, highlighting the voices of residents and staff, and creating new ways for our community to engage in Avenue’s work and future.
Thank you for being part of this journey—then, now, and what’s next.
With gratitude,

There are 2 ways you can help keep Houstonians in the communities they love.

The Urgency: The Time is Now
3 out of 4 renters in Avenue’s communities are considered Very or Extremely Low Income, earning less than 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI), under $50,000 for a family of 4.

Few options: For every 100 Extremely Low-Income households in Houston (under 30% Area Median Income), there are only 17 homes they can actually afford to rent.

The gap is widening: In Houston, people earning an average local salary are about $176,000 short of being able to buy a median-priced home.

Where do your donations go? 90¢ out of every $1 donated directly funds programs to strengthen communities.
Your Impact:
Your support goes directly into the foundations of our community. We aren’t just “funding programs,” we are:
Preserving Affordability:
Keeping local rents stable so long-term residents aren’t priced out of their own neighborhoods.

Creating Homeowners:
Providing the coaching and grants that turn renters into generational wealth-builders.

Strengthening Neighborhoods:
Investing in the civic infrastructure that makes Houston neighborly, vibrant, and inclusive.
