Avenue Community Development Corporation (Avenue CDC) is proud to announce that construction has begun on Fulton Gardens, an independent living, senior housing project on Fulton Street in Houston’s Near Northside community.  The 49-unit complex, which will provide affordable senior housing with convenient access to public transportation and will be located directly across from Moody Park, the area’s largest park. This is the only Houston project to receive funding from HUD in 2009 to provide much-needed senior housing in the area.

The Fulton project will provide 48 units for seniors 62 years of age and older, with an additional unit designated for a resident manager. The complex will allow residents to live independently while maintaining a high-quality of life with rent that doesn’t exceed their means. The residents will not pay more than 30% of their income toward rent and utilities. According to the 2000 Census, for the zip code in Near Northside, 43% of seniors pay more than 35% on housing alone, leaving them with limited funds for food, clothing and other needs.

The project is extremely well-located with public transportation across the street and the planned light rail line a block away. Residents also can enjoy Moody Park across the street and quick access to the local YMCA and the neighborhood library, as well as the Casa de Amigos Health Center minutes away on Main Street. Both the YMCA and the library offer a number of programs designed specially for seniors.
