Community Initiatives

Near Northside

This area is directly north of Houston’s downtown, from I-10 north to Cavalcade, bounded by Maury Street on the east and I-45 on the west.

Since 2002, we have been supporting Near Northside residents to create a stronger, more connected, safer place for families to live. Our major affordable housing developments include Avenue Place, Avenue Terraces, Avenue Station, Avenue Villas and Fulton Gardens.

“We envision that our community will be a safe and inviting place where all ages and income levels can live well in quality housing; a place with an outstanding educational system that nurtures every child until they achieve their goals in education and life; and a neighborhood where we all work together to build on our strengths to create a diverse, vibrant, and connected community.”

Northline

This area is located approximately four miles north of downtown Houston, bounded by Tidwell Road on the north, the Burlington Northern rail line (a half mile north of 610) on the south, Hardy Toll Road on the east, and I-45 on the west.

We began our development efforts in this area in 2003, with a supportive developmental role in Oak Arbor Townhomes. In 2015, we were invited to share our community building and engagement strategy with the neighborhood. With initial support from NeighborWorks America and then the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, we have worked with more than 1,500 residents and 65 institutional partners to create Our Northline: A Health Equity Plan. The plan guides us into a future where we help resident leaders build a strong, safe, supportive, and connected community.
