Avenue Place: including 95 single family homes, 144 apartment units, and an acre of parkland_Land planning by Asakura Robinson
Avenue CDC is undertaking its biggest development to date in Houston’s Near Northside community. Prompted by recommendations in the 2002 Northside Village Economic Revitalization plan, the non-profit organization has purchased the former Fedex Freight facility at 4004 Irvington Boulevard, which includes 20 acres of land to be used for residential and possibly light retail development.
The Northside Village Economic Revitalization Plan was developed over a period of nine months with the guidance of a steering committee of community stakeholders, including neighborhood civic associations, neighborhood service organizations, the school district, business organizations, Avenue CDC and others. Resident input also included three community-wide workshops, which were well-attended with more than 100 participants at each.
Major recommendations in the plan included the redevelopment of industrial and semi-industrial properties as single-family residential, as well as the development of multi-family housing on commercial corridors. The Irvington Boulevard location was specifically identified in the plan due to its location adjacent to current residential neighborhoods, as well as the strength of the businesses in the area and close proximity to public transportation.
